  “Donde el dólar no compra el alma” De un país pequeño vengo, pero grande en su manera de querer. Allí­ la gente se junta sin tener que comprender, porque el corazón es idioma que no teme responder. Aquí­, en cambio, la prisa manda, y el silencio es ley. Las calles brillan, sí, pero ¿qué brillo si nadie mira al que está al lado? Un país dorado, pero hueco en su costado. La comida: allá nace de la tierra. Aquí nace del mercado. Allá lo fresco es sagrado, aquí­ lo rápido es rey coronado. Las fiestas: allá son alma, aquí son saldo descontado. Qué irónico: cuanto más grande el país, más pequeño el lazo. Pero aquella noche del 31, cuando el cielo explotó en colores gastados, mi madre volvió a mí como un verso esperado. Diez años rotos se fundieron en un abrazo largo, y entendí­ que no hay progreso que compense ese intervalo. Traten de vender la tradición, de empacar el corazón: no podrán.   Acknowledgments To my family and those who taught me to let go of the past, value the present, and pursue my future. Section 1 From El Salvador to the United States: A Distorted Culture My name is Diego Fernando Merino Mejía, and I grew up in El Salvador in a small canton. My family, friends, and others lived around the community and brought life to the place. Culture was a fundamental part of my life and is very important to my family; it's like our way of living and feeling. Some relatives had distinctive tastes. My mother loved Salvadoran cuisine and was a stylist, the creative one, my father liked family activities, the quiet but fun one, my uncles loved soccer and my grandfather took us to cool places, the adventurous one. Salvadoran culture is my identity, my life, and when I arrived in the United States, I saw a huge contrast in the culture at large. Today, a combination of Hispanic and American cultures has blended together. It feels like a soup that sometimes tastes good...

       Diego Fernando Merino Mejía is a 20 year old Business Administration student at San Francisco Bay University. He was born in El Salvador and moved to the United States four years ago. Spanish is his first language, and he also speaks English. He attended Russell Westbrook Academy in South Gate, Los Angeles, He was also part of College Track, a program that helps students prepare for college. Diego enjoys sports like soccer and basketball, being outdoors with his friends in his free time. He is interested in entrepreneurship and hopes to run his own business in the future. He is currently working on his project for student mental health support. Diego wants to improve in several aspects of his life and also thinks about growing as a person and exploring his possibilities to grow academically as well as in everyday life.
